Guide to Disabling Windows Defender

Windows Defender, now known as Microsoft Defender Antivirus, is an integrated security solution in Windows 10 and Windows 11. While it’s designed to protect your system from threats, there are scenarios where you might need to disable it temporarily or permanently. This guide provides detailed steps for both methods, complete with descriptions and screenshots.

Method 1: Temporarily Disable Windows Defender

Step 1: Access Windows Security Settings

  • Click on the Start button and select the Settings icon.
  • In the Settings window, choose Update & Security.
  • Navigate to Windows Security in the left-hand menu.
  • Click on Virus & threat protection.

Step 2: Turn Off Real-Time Protection

  • In the Virus & threat protection window, select Manage settings under the Virus & threat protection settings section.
  • Locate the Real-time protection toggle and switch it to the Off position.
  • A warning will appear indicating that your device may be vulnerable; confirm your choice.
  • Note: Real-time protection will automatically re-enable after a short period or upon system restart.

Method 2: Permanently Disable Windows Defender Using Group Policy Editor

This method is applicable for users running Windows 10 Pro, Enterprise, or Education editions. It involves using the Local Group Policy Editor to turn off Windows Defender permanently.

Step 1: Disable Tamper Protection

  • Before proceeding, you need to turn off Tamper Protection to prevent Windows from automatically re-enabling Defender.
  • Follow the steps in Method 1 to access the Virus & threat protection settings.
  • Click on Manage settings under Virus & threat protection settings.
  • Scroll down to Tamper Protection and toggle it to the Off position.

Step 2: Open Local Group Policy Editor

  • Press the Windows Key + R to open the Run dialog box.
  • Type gpedit.msc and press Enter.

Step 3: Navigate to Windows Defender Settings

  • In the Local Group Policy Editor, go to:

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus

  • On the right pane, locate and double-click on Turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus.

Step 4: Configure the Policy Setting

  • In the policy window, select the Enabled option.
  • Click Apply, then OK to save the changes.

Step 5: Restart Your Computer

  • To apply the changes, restart your system.
  • Upon reboot, Windows Defender will be disabled permanently.
